Tarik Nowlin

Halfling Special Operative of King Taron.

“Consider yourself recruited to the cause.” - Battle at Blacklake (RPA-ADV1)
He is shaking hands with Taron before his first mission for Nalos, and Taron leans in to whisper something in his ear that no one had ever said to him before: “I trust you, Tarik.” - Silver Threads of Fate (LC1)

A former member of the Starlit Door prior to the Dragul Invasion, joining mainly to check on Rose, whom he cared for very much. Became an enemy of the order when he stole arcane secrets for King Taron.

“You know he joined the Door just to steal a chart of the planes for the king?” - Rose - Silver Thread of Fates (LC1)

Self-proclaimed confidant of the Immortal Knight, and Bearer of Bad News and Terrible Secrets.

Race: Halfling
Affliation/Loyalty: King's Guard/Nalos

Personality

First to make light of any situation, Tarik is an especially adept and accomplished rogue and informant. He has a quick mind and is able to assess the current situation with great speed and acuracy.

Despite his mischievous tone and at times controversial methods, Tarik's loyalty is never in question.

Tarik was a rogue and a scoundrel, yet devoted to his country and king. - Gate of Brizoor Waal (RPA-ADVF)

Miscellaneous

A pry iron found at the barracks of Taron's Arena was once the property of Tarik;

“Well I’ll be,” he says. “Looks like this belonged to Tarik Nowlin. I’d get rid of it if I were you.” - Minthrok, Eye of Ulos (RPA-ADV4)

Childhood Connections

Rose, King Taron, and Tarik all grew up in Jolev together;

“Gods, she was a real bully,” he tells you. “Never left me alone when we were young. After her dad died, she [Rose] started talking about the planes and wearing the Starlit Door’s ring. - Tarik, Silver Threads of Fate (LC1)
“An old friend, and a dear one.” - King Taron - Silver Threads of Fate (LC1)
“We’re in Jolev. You can smell the rotting seaweed and pig farts. I try to stay away from this town, but somehow fate keeps bringing me back.” - Tarik Nowlin - Silver Threads of Fate (LC1)

Tarik is described as always having a propensity for thievery, even in his youth;

“Here’s a rascal for you. If a pie went missing from a window sill, you could count on finding young Tarik napping under a tree, covered in crumbs and dabs of filling … But damn him, when I see that face, I can’t help but see that sneaky little kid.” - Rose, Silver Threads of Fate (LC1)

References

Battle at Blacklake (RPA-ADV1)

Tarik introduces himself as a special agent of the King, on an assignment to secure an outpost taken by the Dragul;

He proves his skill by eliminating an enemy encampment quietly and meeting you inside the walls, where you surprise Tog, an Ogre;

  • If you slay it, you will win Tarik's approval.
  • If you let it go, Tarik will keep his eye on you.

Following the events at Blacklake, Tarik leaves you with a durgolium sack for housing interplanar objects.

Outbreak in Undercity (RPA-ADV3)

The Orc Undercity Thieves Guild guard mentions in passing that during the Dragul Invasion Tarik fought alongside the Immortal Knight in the Black Dunes.

Crack in Kulbak (RPA-ADV5)

Tarik is next heard from the sewers of Kulbak Prison, looking for a way to distract the guards from his activities;

If you are able to successfully draw their attention, you later find Tarik in the Catacombs below, exhuming Khathandor and extracting his horn.

  • Overcome the spirit of Khathandor in battle.
  • Fall to Khathandor as his spectral form passes through you and enters the world.

Gate of Brizoor Waal (RPA-ADVF)

Tarik will fight for the King's Guard against a Starlit Door cultist, her ice wyrm, and a Dragul Satyr atop a mountain in Iktel, Plane of Frost:

  • If you side with the King's Guard, you will fight alongside him:
    • If you defeat the opposition and are favored by the Halfling, he will greet you illustriously. You claim the site, and find a blue rune.
    • If you defeat the opposition and are disfavored by the Halfling, you will come into his good graces and claim the site, finding a blue rune.
    • If you fall to the opposition, you stumble through a rift back to Elsifor's Tent at Brizoor Waal in defeat.

Silver Threads of Fate (LC1)

The rest of Sabek is frozen in time thanks to the actions of King Taron. You alone are able to move freely through the city and numerous rifts that you find.

You find Tarik standing just outside of the Palace Gates. He, like everyone else but you, is frozen in time. While the rest of the citizens are looking toward the smoke billowing from Taron's Arena, Tarik is looking skyward. A rift has formed above the Palace. Noticing a ring in his satchel, you take it only to find out that it can read minds. It may prove useful in the future.

You will have the opportunity to free him from his frozen state. Having the king's ring, formerly in Tarik's possession, now in your own possession will not be a good look for you.

  • Tell him honestly how you got the ring. He will join you on your quest.
  • Make up an unconvincing story and watch him slip away into the crowds.

If Tarik does remain with you, upon seeing the destruction of Taron's Arena, he is quick to deduce that it was the work of the Starlit Door. It is not a political statement. The explosion was clearly a diversion.

The Starlit Door’s agenda is not political, so this is not an attempt at insurrection. No, it must be covering for some other plot. Tarik’s mind quickly surveys the valuable artifacts concealed around Sabek, and correctly deduces that the Door aims to steal the Eye of Ulos from the temple. - Silver Threads of Fate (LC1)
