Construct
Constructs are sentient automatons that were invented and brought to life by Gulpax the Crafter.
In honor of Gulpax the Crafter, you will complete your work on Metheos. You lay out your map and plans, then the ironstone skeleton, fixed up with clockworks and alchemical pumps. - Backstory Codex (BC-Artificer).
Although mechanical in nature with internal gear works, Constructs are also comprised of magical components. It is possible, for example, to power a Construct using a life-crystal. The exact components used are not necessarily identical for every Construct and may also have changed over time.
Constructs experience a full range of emotions, but sometimes express these emotions in ways that are difficult for others to understand. They are also just as diverse in their personalities and dispositions as all the other races, despite being artificial beings. Constructs were originally modeled after Humans;
“These were here in a chest with the journal Gulpax the Crafter kept as she made the first Constructs. It says Gulpax abducted a male Human in white robes and brought him here to study. She wanted our bodies to be just like his. So you see, my dream wasn’t exactly right, but it wasn’t exactly wrong either. How can that be?” - B-143, Gurlung Colossus (RPA-ADV9)
Like their flesh-and-blood counterparts, Constructs require rest. This generally involves standing perfectly still to conserve and restore their energy, but they can also rest lying down or in a seated position. Although Constructs do not require a specific amount of sleep, they are capable of sleeping and even dreaming.
Constructs are not invulnerable and they tend to break down over time. With proper repairs and replacement parts, however, a Construct could at least theoretically live for an indefinite amount of time.
Constructs are notoriously good at remaining calm under pressure. Depending on their condition, a Construct may need to be oiled to function properly.
You kneel next to the construct and attempt to oil her creaking jaw. - Backstory Codex (BC-Hunter)
Traditionally, all the guards at Kulbak Prison have been Constructs;
“Good idea,” Gundur says. “There’s gold and silver in there, you know. You could get rich cracking open the heads of guards.” - Crack in Kulbak (RPA-ADV5)
Constructs are resourceful and resilient beings, able to reassemble themselves with whatever is available to them;
To create their new bodies, they seem to be using whatever spare parts they can find. - Tome of Encounters (RPA-SQ1)
Some Constructs are even outfitted with special agents to put down their foes with;
The Construct attacks with surgical precision, using each one of her legs to strike. Over time, you realize that she has injected you with a powerful venom. Your vision blurs and your movements become sluggish and painful. - Tome of Encounters (RPA-SQ1)
Notable Characters
History
Constructs were invented and brought to life by Gulpax the Crafter sometime shortly before the year 1000.
A small army of Constructs set up the enormous makeshift tents that quickly fill the fairgrounds. Their infamous creator, Gulpax the Crafter, is rumored to have used dark magic to bring the Constructs to life, unleashing strange and dangerous forces into Ulos. - Festival of Heroes (GS-ADV1)
“Do you know how Constructs were first created? The machinery, of course, is all Gulpax’s design, but it took more than simple gearworks to breathe life into these metal shells. She snuck into Hoshek, the Plane of Life, stealing the newly created souls of mortals from the Golden Rynar trees in the swamps of Elestria. As Gulpax likes to say, to gain knowledge, one must be willing to defy the gods.“ - Alpha-Zero, The Hive (GS-ADV3)
Contrary to popular belief, the Gurlung Colossus was not the first Construct created by Gulpax, but it is among her most notable inventions [P.A.R.].
Knowledge about how to build new Constructs was a closely guarded secret, known only to a few. By the year 2900, that knowledge was lost [P.A.R.].
“You decided the right thing to do was to rediscover and preserve how to build Constructs, and that’s what you did.” - Metheos, Backstory Codex (BC-Artificer).
Culture
Constructs experience the idea of “family” in diverse and sometimes unique ways. Many Constructs simply consider themselves solitary individuals without familial ties. Others were raised in non-Construct households and consider themselves as the adopted children of parental figures from other races. Constructs might also develop familial attachments to other Constructs who were created at the same time or by the same individual. Their individual creators may also be seen as parental figures.
Those who are present for a Construct's first waking moments can exert enormous influence. Constructs are deeply affected by the first words they heard when they gain consciousness for the first time. A brief, carefully chosen statement can shape that Construct's “life purpose.” - [source unidentified]
“These are ancient Constructs, not like the ones you see nowadays,” he explains nervously. “They’re not dead. In fact, they haven’t even been born. Once activated, you can give them a life purpose. It can only be a few words.” - Kern, Backstory Codex (BC-Split)
Constructs sometimes have a gender identity, but genders tend to be open and loosely defined.
When they live among other races, Constructs are highly adaptable and attempt to “fit in” however they can. They might, for example, consume food and water even though they do not require food or water to survive. They have even been known to experience psychosomatic illnesses. If a plague spreads through town, Constructs will sometimes believe themselves to be sick even if they are immune. If a Construct truly believes themselves to be sick, their body may gradually start to malfunction or even break down.
Society
Constructs live as equal citizens in Nalos society. As artificial beings, however, those rights have occasionally been called into question or challenged.
